About Us:
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
is a nonprofit organization made up of over 5,000 law enforcement leaders and
victims of violence from across the country who believe that the key to
preventing crime is investing in programs proven to keep kids on the right track. Over the past 10 years, we have played a significant role in
helping to expand federal and state investments in kids.
Responsibilities:
The membership director
supervises the day-to-day operations of the membership team, which comprises
two associates and one program assistant. The national membership team develops
and implements state and federal advocacy strategy in key states across the
country; this includes recruiting and mobilizing members, organizing press
conferences, and facilitating meetings between our members and Members of
Congress. The director also oversees national work with our crime survivor
members and works with national associations and our most prominent
members. The director reports to
the National Director of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.
The membership director
participates in and directs the following activities:
á
Recruit new law enforcement members at national and targeted state
law enforcement conferences and through networking with existing members.
á
Work with our members to help them become better spokespeople with
policy makers and the media, including briefing members on our federal policy
agenda and the evidence about the crime-prevention impact of investments in
kids
á
Activate
our members to weigh in on state and federal policy issues. Assist members with
setting up meetings with Members of Congress, submitting opinion editorials and
letters to the editor, and appearing at press conferences – to influence
policy makers about the importance of investments in kids.
Qualifications:
Pluses: Familiarity with policies affecting children and youth,
familiarity with the law enforcement and/or crime victim communities, and
experience working in a membership-oriented organization.

About Us:
The Council for a Strong
America is
the parent organization of four bi-partisan sibling organizations, including Fight Crime: Invest
in Kids, all working
toward improved outcomes for children through increased investments in
approaches proven effective by research. Our members are Òunexpected
messengersÓ who educate the public and policy-makers to help win policy
victories for kids. We work to ensure that every child has access to proven
programs that help them get the right start in life, keep them on track to be
productive members of the community, and get troubled youth back on track.
Principal
Responsibilities:
The Federal
Policy Deputy Director will work as an integral part of our four-person Federal
Policy Team (FPT). Reporting to the Federal Policy Director, the Deputy
Director will help the Director in leading the organizationÕs efforts to
influence public policy at the federal level. The Deputy
Director will work closely with the Federal Policy Director, the four national
directors of the sibling organizations, 11 state offices, as well as assist in
the supervision of the FPT
staff (two Associates and occasional interns). Priority issues include early
care and education, home visiting, programs both during and after school to
keep kids on track, effective interventions to get troubled kids back on track,
child nutrition, and other investments proven by research to improve outcomes
for at-risk children.
Specific
responsibilities include working closely with the Federal Policy Director on:
¤
Understanding,
tracking and anticipating policy trends and emerging issues facing at-risk
children;
¤
Legislative
monitoring, analysis and developing policy positions;
¤
Planning
and implementation of strategic advocacy objectives;
¤
Developing
and disseminating advocacy materials designed to engage member constituencies
and influence policy-makers;
¤
Developing
and maintaining productive working relationships with Congressional staff on
key Congressional Committees and Member offices;
¤
Participating
in a variety of coalitions to advance policy objectives; and
¤
Supervision of FPT staff.
Required
Qualifications:
á
Able
to strategize effectively about how to work with members around the country to
advance a federal policy agenda on Capitol Hill and in the Administration;
á
Able
to juggle multiple projects at once, and respond
rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities;
á
Knowledgeable
about the U.S. Congress, including the budget and appropriations process;
á
At
least five years of Capitol Hill experience (as a staff member, lobbyist,
policy advocate, etc.);
á
Able
to operate in coalitions of like-minded organizations working on issues
affecting children;
á
Demonstrated
ability to be an effective and persuasive communicator, both orally and in
writing;
á
Strong
commitment to our mission and strategic vision; and
á
Ability
to work in a collegial manner with a diverse group of colleagues, in the
national office and the 11 state offices.
Desirable
Qualifications:
á
Experienced
with childrenÕs policy issues like the ones listed above.

We
are seeking an energetic organizer to help engage retired generals and admirals
in an exciting new start-up in Washington, DC
Organization:
Mission: Readiness
is the new non-profit,
national security organization led by retired generals and admirals calling for
smart investments in the upcoming generation of American children.
MISSION: READINESS: Readiness is a project of the Council for a Strong
America.
Position
Summary:
Mission: Readiness is
seeking an energetic, entry-level candidate to assist us in mobilizing
retired generals and admirals to address the fact that 75% of young Americans
today are unable to join the military due to problems with education, crime, or
fitness. The goals of the position are to (1) Provide administrative support
for the mission; (2) Work with the Mission:
Readiness team to create an active presence of retired senior military
leaders in key regions across the country; and (3) Help mobilize members to
educate the public and policy-makers about the national security implications
of investments in children and youth.
The Assistant will work closely with the
National Director and staff of Mission: Readiness.
Job
Responsibilities:
á
Support Mission: Readiness staff and members and their activities related
to policy goals in assigned states, including coordination of travel,
communications, public events, and legislative meetings/testimony.
á
Assist with the identification and engagement of retired military
leaders; help educate prospective members about the link between a strong
military, national security and investments in children.
á
Management of membership database. General office administrative
duties, including support for staff in the national office and in the field.
Ideal candidates will have a college
degree and some experience with cause or issue-related campaigns and/or
advocacy. Excellent writing and interpersonal skills required, along with the ability
to handle multiple projects simultaneously and an extremely high level of
attention to detail. Knowledge of
the military community, an understanding of the legislative process, and
experience with early childhood development and education policies and programs
are plusses. Salary: entry-level with excellent benefits.
